In the middle of picturesque British parkland we see an enormous blank canvas. Crowds approach, armed with brushes and rollers, and pots of paint. Over a series of time lapse shots, we see the vibrant promotional artwork for The Proms being painted over the canvas and bringing it to life.
Working from reference material gathered on-set we built the huge canvas in Soft Image and it was tracked into the shots. The grand scale of the canvas meant it wasn’t practical to use a chroma screen so the crowds had to be rotoscoped and painted back into the scene. A dismal Summer morning had to be given the golden glow of a bucolic British afternoon in the grade. The animated painting was revealed with mattes designed to ensure the emerging artwork had a hand painted feel, and the time lapse effect was added in post rather than captured in camera. CG flags and birds were added to complete the scene.
