50A RATHBONE PLACE LONDON
ENVY DOES POST ON ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
December 2011

We are really pleased to have worked on the award-winning Absolutely Fabulous which is returning to BBC One this Christmas with the first of three specials to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will reprise their roles as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, together with original cast members Julia Sawalha as Saffy, June Whitfield as Mother and Jane Horrocks as Bubble.

Not a lot has changed, Eddy is still living in her white stucco house in Notting Hill. Patsy (Joanna Lumley) is still stashing joints in her beehive. Saffron (Julia Sawalha) has adopted an African baby. Eddy is, of course, indulging in every passing fashion phase imaginable: the most fabulous outfit is one comprised entirely of distressed denim, with a denim maxi her mother describes as ‘looking as though your jeans have exploded’. The famous stairs to the basement kitchen now serve as a comedic device to get the most out of Eddy’s vertiginous shoe-boots.

Much, though, is so very different, while in the original episodes there were no dark shadows lurking over Eddy and Pasty, here we have Eddy cash-strapped, while Patsy is forced to go to the benefits office and apply for a pension. Also we have the iPad, of course, being jiggled by Bubble, and the iPhone 4, and Tweeting: ‘Blog it, flog it, tweet it,’

Absolutely Fabulous was graded by Vicki Matich at ENVY. ‘Ab Fab is very different from most projects I've done in that it was shot multi-cam before a live studio audience. It was very important not to loose that feel or drift too far from the original series, it wasn't to look "graded" but at the same time it was to have a bit of an update. So we concentrated on making it look colourful, bright, warm and made sure there was consistency between the cameras. The most difficult part from a grading perspective was making sure all the skin tones looked natural. Each character had remarkably different skin tones and so there was a bit of keying and tracking to do’.
